WILLIAM R.SNOW.
Sketches of Chinese Life & Character. London: Dickinson Bros., [circa 1860]. 3 parts in one volume. 2° (49 x 36cm). Section title? to part III mounted as a general title, mounted on guards throughout. 18 tinted lithographed plates by M.& N.Hanhart after Snow. (11th plate The Game of Shuttlecock with small tear in blank margin, without section titles to parts I and II, title lightly soiled). Modern cloth-backed boards, section of original glazed-paper printed upper wrapper mounted on upper cover.
A fine, rare series of prints from sketches made in Hong Kong and the surrounding province of Canton, which despite the rather condescending titles do give a genuine insight into the life of ordinary Chinese. This series has appeared at auction twice in the last 20 years, once without titles, and the second copy lacking one plate, both sets were hand-coloured. Not in Abbey, Tooley, Colas, Lipperheide or Cordier.
