A menu card for a farewell dinner given in honour of the Captain, officers and crew of S.Y.Nimrod, Torbay Hotel, Torquay, 6 August 1907, 16.4 x 10.7cm, WITH 14 SIGNATURES ON VERSO. including: Ernest Shackleton, Rupert England (Captain of the Nimrod), Harry Dunlop (chief engineer); Jameson Boyd Adams (shore-party); Aeneas Mackintosh (shore-party); Alastair Forbes Mackay (shore-party); Ernest R. Joyce (shore-party, signature in pencil, overwritten in ink). (Some old glue adhering to recto of card.)
[With:] a part sheet extracted from an autograph book, signed and dated 7 August 1907, by Shackleton and W.A.Rupert Michell (surgeon).
[And:] a sheet extracted from an autograph book, dated August 1907, bearing 11 signatures (Shackleton, England and others).
Provenance: Mrs Jones (a family friend of the Englands, and godmother to their daughter); by descent. A fine selection recalling the final days before the departure of the expedition. The Nimrod left the East India Docks on July 30th for the regatta at Cowes. Calling in at Eastbourne, she was ready for Edward VII's inspection on the afternoon of Sunday August 3rd. She reached Torquay on the 5th, the farewell dinner was held on the 6th, and she finally set sail for the South on August 7th 1907. (3)
