Marston was the artist on Shackelton's British Antarctic Expedition of 1907-09 and produced illustrations for Aurora Australis (see lot 136), the first book printed in Antarctica, for Shackleton's own account of the expedition The Heart of the Antarctic (London, 1909) and for his and James Murray's Antarctic Days (see lot 135). He went on to serve under Shackleton again on the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition of 1914-17.
The present drawing shows the Nimrod en route to Cape Royds, the expedition's winter base near Mt. Erebus on the Ross Sea.
