Lot Essay

Cf. Surgeon Captain P. D. Gordon Pugh, Naval Ceramics (1971), pl. 60A for a Staffordshire jug with a similar print of Captain Hull.

Isaac Hull (1775-1843) was a commodore in the American Navy.
At the beginning of the Anglo-American War in 1812, as Captain of the Constitution, he successfully managed to elude a British squadron in the Atlantic, a feat which was seen as one of the most remarkable in American naval history.
