Lot Essay

Baron George Bridges Rodney (1719-1792), admiral. He was nicknamed 'Old Dreadnought' and 'Brave Boscawen'. In 1779, Rodney was appointed commander-in-chief of Barbados and the Leewars Islands. In 1782, Rodney in the Barfleur, with Sir Samuel Hood as his second in command, encountered the French fleet under Comte de Grasse. Rodney sank one ship and took eleven in the battle which lasted for eleven hours. This battle which became known as The Battle of the Saintes was felt to restore to Great Britain the supremacy of the seas. Rodney was honoured, becoming Baron Rodney of Stoke Rodney in Somerset, and his officers and seamen received the thanks of parliament.
