An English porcelain Bute-shaped cup and a pearlware saucer
thought to be a memorial to Captain James Lawrence, each printed in black with an eagle perched on a rocky shore above an anchor, before two ships, one flying the American flag, below a pink lustre rim, circa 1810, the cup -- 6cm. high; a Staffordshire figure of Admiral Lord Nelson wearing military uniform, modelled standing, well-coloured and gilt, on a circular gilt-line base, mid 19th century -- 16.5cm. high; a jug modelled as the head and shoulders of Admiral Lord Nelson, well coloured, 20th century -- 18cm. high

Lot Essay

James Lawrence (1781-1813) captain in the United States Navy. He entered the navy in 1798 and served in the Tripolian War of 1801 and the Anglo-American war, the later in command of the Hornet. Later he was to take command of the frigate Chesapeake. On the 1st June, 1813, the Chesapeake met in battle in Boston harbour, the British frigate Shannon, commanded by Captain Broke. Lawrence was fatally wounded and the British took posession of the ship. Lawrence died on the 5th June.
