Cf. Surgeon Captain P. D. Gordon Pugh, Naval Ceramics (1971), col. pl. 3. According to the author (p. 19), 'although the figure has not as yet been shown to be based on a painting by Reynolds, the facial features are very similar to those of the portrait executed by Reynolds in 1779, now in the National Maritime Museum'.
