A RARE IMPERIAL CINNABAR LACQUER BRUSHPOT
KANGXI

The cylindrical brushpot is raised on four bracket feet, the exterior deeply carved to depict eighteen luohans in various pursuits, sitting in groups, singly in contemplation, and one riding on a lion, all amidst pine trees and rockwork by the waterside, with a dragon emerging from breaking waves, all reserved on a green ocean-wave ground, the interior undecorated with black lacquer (rims stablised)

Compare with a very similar red lacquer brushpot with the same subject in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Gugong Bowuyuan Cang Diaoqi, 1985, no. 279.
