A VERY FINELY CARVED ZITAN CIRCULAR BOX AND COVER
17TH CENTURY

Of slightly flattened globular form, the vessel is densely carved in medium relief from zitan with an attractive patina, the levelled surface of the cover with a central floral medallion surrounded by five animal masks and the curved sides with archaistic scrollwork suspending five pendent ruyi-heads, the steep sides of the box decorated with five sets of archaistic phoenix confronted in pairs below animal masks, all raised on a ring foot
3 7/8 in. (9.9 cm.) high
