The exterior of each bowl finely carved in shallow relief with shou characters on the facetted sides, each character framed by a pair of tied half-palmettes below the mouth rim, further decorated with a band of ruyi-heads encircling above the short circular foot ring; each of the well-matched octagonal covers similarly decorated with the shou characters radiating around the everted circular finial, the semi-translucent stone of even tone suffused with white speckles (rim chip to one cover)

It is rare to find octagonal bowls carved with conforming covers using such good quality and well-matched white jade material. Circular bowls are the most popular form chosen to limit the wastage of the material.
