A FINE AND VERY RARE BLUE AND WHITE PEAR-SHAPED VASE, YUHUCHUNPING
ENCIRCLED QIANLONG SIX-CHARACTER MARK AND OF THE PERIOD

The pear-shaped body finely painted in underglaze-blue of rich inky-blue tones in imitation of Ming-style 'heaping and piling' effect, the main body decorated with a broad composite floral meander, the large blooms borne on slender stems bearing foliage, the neck encircled by a band of florettes dividing a band of pendent ruyi lappets and a border of upright bladed leaves, rising up the waisted neck with widely flared mouth, the lower part of the body encircled by a band of blue-ground lotus petal lappets, above a further florette band around the slightly splayed foot

The Ming dynasty prototype of early fifteenth century date, painted with a broad flower scroll below related elements, is illustrated by J. Pope, Chinese Porcelains from the Ardebil Shrine, pl. 53, no. 29.447. A closely related Qianlong-marked vase with a more compressed body was sold in Hong Kong, 2 May 1995, lot 72. Compare also a related Qianlong-marked vase with additional dragons among lotus scrolls, from the Robert Chang Collection, sold in these Rooms, 31 October 2000, lot 829.
