AN EMBELLISHED WHITE JADE HAIRPIN, BIANFANG

The spatulate white jade hairpin of even colour, applied on both ends with carved pink tourmaline, bright green jadeite, ruby and coral, with bats in flight over branches bearing peaches, blossoms and leaves, the reverse undecorated (losses replaced)

Lot Essay

Known as a bianfang, it forms part of the qi tou or headdress of Manchu ladies of rank and worn across the top of the headdress to stiffen the frame. Compare to an inlaid aloeswood hairpin sold in these Rooms, The Imperial Sale, 27 April 1997, lot 95.
