The simple but elegant form of this dish is also seen among imperial ceramics of the Northern Song period. The shallow shape with slightly everted rim may be likened to the famous Ru ware made for the Northern Song court, although without the defining line between the base and sides, which is a feature of the wooden core on lacquer wares.

A similar Song dynasty plain circular lacquer dish was exhibited in the Osaka Municipal Art Museum, Arts of the Song and Yuan, 1978, and illustrated in the Catalogue, nos. 3-7. Three slightly smaller plain black lacquer Song dishes are illustrated by Messrs Eskenazi, Chinese Lacquer from the Jean-Pierre Dubosc collection and others, London, 1992, illustrated in the Catalogue, no. 1. A somewhat larger (24.7 cm. diam.) plain red lacquer dish of similar form is in the Lee Collection, included in the exhibition, Drache und Phoenix - Lackarbeiten aus China: Sammlung der Familie Lee, Tokyo, in the Museum fur Ostasiatische Kunst der Stadt Koln, 1990, illustrated in the Catalogue, no. 20.
