A RARE FLORAL-FORM BLACK LACQUER DISH
YUAN DYNASTY

The dish is formed with six lobes on the gently curved sides and with raised ribs on the cavetto to distinguish the petals, standing on a metal-bound foot ring, lobed to conform with the floral-shaped rim, covered with a brownish-black lacquer, the interior with an original metal lining, age cracks
7 in. (17.8 cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

The form and style of the present dish continues from the earlier Song versions. In addition, the lobing on the rim is seen to extend along the sides to the foot.

A six-lobed bowl with a silver-bound foot and of similar style, was included in the exhibition, 2000 Years of Chinese Lacquer, the Oriental Ceramic Society of Hong Kong, 1993, Catalogue, no. 19.
