MING DYNASTY

The exterior is deeply carved through multiple layered red and black lacquer with six scrolling lappet-shaped motifs descending from the everted rim above a band of ruyi-shaped motifs around the cylindrical short foot, the interior and base with silvered-metal lining (mouth rim chip)

Lot Essay

A similarly decorated bowl with a straight rim was formerly in the collection of Sir Harry Garner, illustrated in Chinese and Associated Lacquer from the Garner Collection, 1973, no. 11, pl. 5b. The Garner bowl is fitted with a silver lining and dated to the 15th-16th century.
