MING DYNASTY

Deeply carved around the body through alternate layers of red and black lacquer with eight pendent scrolling lappets and corresponding upright ruyi heads, below a plain band under the flaring mouth rim, the interior and base with silvered-metal lining
4 3/4 in. (12.1 cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

Two slightly wider bowls, with silver liners, and carved in a very similar style to the current example were excavated from a Song tomb in Shaozhou county, Jiangsu in 1977, illustrated in Wenwu, 1981, no. 8, p. 39.
