Lot Essay

Meiping vases covered in aubergine glaze are extremely rare, and no other Qianlong example appears to be recorded. The closest comparison to this lot is an aubergine bottle vase impressed with a Qianlong seal mark from the Baur Collection, illustrated by J. Ayers, Chinese Ceramics in the Baur Collection, vol. 2, A475, no. 323. Compare also the Qianlong-marked aubergine-glazed tripod vessel, jue, illustrated, ibid., no. 322; and another from the Robert Chang Collection, sold in these Rooms, 2 November 1999, lot 507.
