YONGZHENG

The interior is delicately enamelled in vibrant tones with a lady seated amidst treasures and antiques, dressed in fine robes and holding a peony in her hand, before two boys presenting her with a vase of flowers, encircled by a turquoise cell-diaper frieze below the mouth rim, interspersed with three cartouches containing floral sprays, the exterior evenly enamelled in a rich ruby-red

Cf. other ruby-back dishes with similar interior scenes of a lady and boys, one of the same size as the present lot, previously from the James A. Garland and J. Pierpont Morgan Collections, illustrated by Bushell and Laffan, Catalogue of the Morgan Collection of Chinese Porcelains, 1907, no. 484; and a slightly larger one exhibited at the Manchester City Art Gallery, 1913, no. C352, sold in our New York Rooms, 25 March 1998, lot 224.

A Yongzheng dish with the identical interior decoration but without the ruby enamel exterior, is in the Percival David Foundation, London, included in the joint exhibition with C. P. Lin, Elegant Form and Harmonious Decoration, 1992, illustrated in the Catalogue, no. 156.
