Lot Essay

This unusual yellowish-green glaze, lighter in colour to the teadust glaze, is known by its Chinese name as 'eel-skin'-yellow.

A similar example with a glaze of typical teadust colour, in the Koger Collection is illustrated by J. Ayers, Chinese Ceramics: the Koger Collection, p. 164, no. 135; where the author cites that the darker glaze is typical of the later period.

The Koger example and another teadust-glazed vase from the Goldschmidt Collection, sold in Hong Kong, 13 November 1990, lot 64, both have a gentle ridge at the base of the cylindrical neck, probably as an attempt to disguise the luting line when the vase was potted.
