Lot Essay

The original of this equestrian group stands beside the Church of Sant' Antonio in Padua, the former capital of Venetia. It was commissioned by the Venetian people to honour Erasmo de Narni (b. 1370) who was Generalissimo from 1437 to 1438, and the statue was completed in 1447. De Narni was only later given the soubriquet of Gattamelata.
