Lot Essay

During the summer of 1893, while travelling through Brittany, Whistler produced the keystones for Red House, Paimpol and Yellow House, Lannion. The artist and his printer, Henry Belfond, experimented asiduously on Yellow House, one of the most complex of his eight color lithographs. About twenty impressions were made of this print; virtually no two impressions are exactly the same. It appears that different colored inks were selectively applied by hand to portions of the stones. The colors in Yellow House are primarily subdued; the touches of rose-pink in the flowerboxes are unusual and add another dimension to this rare color variant.
