Doucet was born in Paris in 1856. He was a student of Gustave Boulanger and Jules Lefebvre yet was deeply influenced by the work of Jules Bastien Lepage and even more inspired by the Parisian genre scenes of Jean Béraud. Doucet debued at the Salon in 1877 and won the Grand Prix de Rome in 1880. A few years later Doucet won the Médaille d'Or at the 1889 Exhibition Universelle in Paris.
