Christie's charge a buyer's premium of 20.825% of … Read more The PROPERTY OF J.Ph.E.J.M DE NEREE TOT BABBERICH The following 7 lots have been long in the Nerée tot Babberich family, and they never have been on the market before. The family was from Normandy, whence Richard Jean de Nerée (1579-1628) came to the Dutch Republic. He became chaplain to the troops of the Stadholder Prince Maurice. His grandson, Richard Johan (1639-1686), married Catharina Elisabeth van Soeteren (+1682), daughter of Hendrick van Soeteren (+1652) and Catharina van Soeteren, née von Hien (+1659) who are depicted in lot 40. The portrait of Catharina Elisabeth's siter is offered under lot 43. The son of Richard Johan, Johan Florence (1672-1725) married Mechtilda Margaretha van der Veecken. They are portrayed in lot 39. The son of Johan Florence, Richard Johan Dominicus (1701-1747) married Maria Agnes van der Ketten (1709-1782) in 1734. Through this marriage the portrait of Theodoor van der Ketten (1596-1662), her great grandfather, must have entered the collection (lot 44). The Babberich property, from where the portraits have been recently removed, was acquired by Johan Philip Anton de Nerée (1734-1803). His son Frans Joseph Aloysius (1773-1846) was responsible for today's Classicist design of the house. He married Catharina Elisabeth Odulpha Tellegen (1782-1860). Through her the portrait of Anna Catharina van Heemskerck (lot 45) must have entered the collecton. Other pictures, including portraits of the De Nerée tot Babberich collection, were offered in these rooms 9 May 2000, lots 42-57, 20 March 2001, lots 88-95. Lot Essay

Johan Florence de Nerée was the son of Richard Johan de Nerée and Catharina Elisabeth van Soeteren. He married Mechtilda Margaretha van der Veecken, daughter of Ferdinand Philips van der Veecken and Cornelia Uitenbroek, in 1700.

Little is known about the artist. He was active in The Hague where he became member of the guild in 1697.
