Lot Essay

The present pictures are characteristic works by the artist who was the foremost painter of flowers, animals and allegories of the Senses in small format in Antwerp circa 1660/70. His pictures are distinguished by their vivid colours and their fine rendering of details for which he often used copper supports. His art is the continuation of the tradition of scientific naturalism, which started in the sixteenth century and continued throughout the seventeenth.
The present pictures were therefore probably once displayed in a wunderkammer of an Antwerp collector, and illustrated the rich variety of natural phenomena.
