The present work was painted from the first floor window of what was then the Railyway Hotel and is now Foyles Clifden Bay Hotel. It looks towards E.J. Kings pub which is still there today. The view has altered very little. Lady Gregory used to spend holidays in Clifden staying at Rock Glen House and Streamstown House.

Hilary Pyle (loc. cit.) comments on the present work: 'Yeats spent two successive years in Clifden in 1906 and 1907, and this [previously untraced] landscape may date from that period, when he was painting intensively around the area, and perfecting oil landscape. Alternatively, he revisited Clifden from Coole, and painted the view in 1923'.
