Little is know about Richard Carver who came from Waterford and practiced in Dublin as a landscape painter. A landscape of gentlemen out fishing and shooting, probably dating from the 1740s, and signed 'R.Carver', is in the Ulster Museum (see A. Crookshank and the Knight of Glin, The Painters of Ireland c. 1660-1920, London 1978, p. 112, pl. 96) He is also known to have painted overdoors for the drawing room at Howth Castle, Co. Dublin, which are no longer there. These two pictures would appear to be of overdoor format. However, it is possible that the pictures are by Richard Carver's son Robert Carver, (fl.1750-91) who worked as a scene painter in Dublin and London. Robert Carver rarely signed his works but most of the works attributed to him are signed with 'R.C.'
