Lot Essay
Without any accompanying letter it is impossible to date this amusing drawing exactly, but it almost certainly relates to the decade leading up to the First World War when Orpen visited Dublin two or three times a year to teach at the Metropolitan School of Art. However, the distinctive windows in the sketch suggest the location where the artist was staying was probably his parents' home, and the home of his birth, Oriel in Blackrock.
