Lot Essay

This beaker is decorated with three 'emblemata'. Emblemata are symbolical representations, with a Latin motto and an epigrammatic text. From the 16th until the 18th Century they had an enormous influence and popularity. During this period extensive series of these symbolical representations were published in book-form. Probably the reliefs on the beaker are borrowed from such books.
One of the reliefs of the present beaker shows an arm with a shield and an olive branch. Above: 'SUB CLIPEO'. The epigrammatic text in one of the emblemata books explains; piece through weapons. The representation with the sceptre and the text HIS PRAEVIDE ET PROVIDE, which according to the epigrammatic text stands for royal wisdom. The third representation shows an arm with a trumpet with the text INTERCLUSA RESPIRAT. The accompanying text explains that resistance strengthens virtue.
