A SILVER FILIGREE SCROLL OF ESTHER CASE, WITH CONTEMPORARY HA-MELEKH MEGILLAH
Apparently unmarked, Ottoman Empire, second half 19th Century
Case:
The tapering revolving handle and the cylindrical body decorated with S-scrolls, alternating geometrical filigree bands and applied with lozenge-shaped ornaments, the upper section in the form of a graduating two tiered open crown decorated with scrollwork and stylised floral ornaments, terminating in a cone-form knob topped by a ball finial, the thumb-piece with central suspension ring
Scroll:
Megillah on vellum, 5 membranes, 7.2cm. high, 190cm.long, 22 columns of 16 lines, text: 5.5cm. high and 179 cm.long, blind horizontal and vertical ruling, sefardic square script in black ink with taggin (crownlets), almost every column begins with the word ha-Melekh, meaning 'the King', perhaps a hidden way of paying a homage to G-d, the only true King, which is otherwise not mentioned throughout the entire text
