On 4 April 1898, Rodin signed a contract with the Thiébaut Frères foundry in Paris for an edition in bronze of his sculpture Saint-Jean the Baptist. Three reductions were executed from the larger than life-sized version acquired by the French State in 1881. The present sculpture is the deuxième réduction of which only 8 casts were made.
