The present bronze relief is a study for Morte sulla terra, a panel of the Porta della morte of Saint Peter's Basilica. The final version of this door was installed in the Basilica in June of 1964. Porta della morte is one of the three doors executed by Manzù who was a great force in reviving the tradition of creating sculptural doors for eclesiastical buildings.
