Property from a French Private Collector Diego Giacometti grew up in a household where artistic expression was encouraged. His father, the painter Giovanni Giacometti, also enjoyed making his own furniture and this had a strong influence on the young Diego. Though he had begun posing for his brother Alberto's paintings when he was twelve years old, it was sculpture that interested Diego. During a journey to Egypt, Diego was exposed to the treasures of the Cairo museum and saw the Great Sphinx, and he determined to pursue a career as a sculptor. In 1925, he followed his brother to Paris and attended classes taught by the sculptor Antoine Bourdelle. From 1927 to 1941, Diego and Alberto collaborated on various lamp designs for the decorator Jean-Michel Frank. During World War II they remained in Paris but commissions were meager and the two brothers struggled to survive in the occupied city. After the war they resumed their collaborations, working in marble and stone, and Diego created his series of bronze candlesticks, pedestals, tables, desks, and shelves. After the death of his brother in 1966, he began work on what he called choses, which were furniture-sculptures, strongly influenced by Etruscan and Egyptian forms. The last two years of his life he designed and created furniture and luminaries for the Musée Picasso in Paris. Diego Giacometti's oeuvre articulates itself around a typology based on furniture: the Greek table, the double-topped table, the chair, bench, desk, chest and lamp. He executed the majority of these commissions in bronze and was a master in his command of patinas. By extensively working the material and proportions of his objects, and by incorporating figurines such as birds, mice, frogs and other animals onto the framework, he disguised their intended function. At the time of his death, his work was known to only a small select group of collectors and it was not until the opening of the Musée Picasso in 1985 that the larger public was exposed to his art.
