A Victorian Privy Counsellor's Uniform
A Full Dress coatee of the 1st Class, with regulation gold embroidery to collar, cuffs, fronts, pockets and skirts, and gilt buttons mounted with QVC Royal Arms (with Supporters) as Dress Worn at Court Plate 1 No 1; a good Levée Dress coatee, with gold embroidery on collar, cuffs and pockets, with buttons as on the Full Dress coat (cf later regulations which prescribed Royal Arms buttons without Supporters for all Levée coats other than those of the Indian Political Department); a pair of white Melton knee-breeches; a pair of Levée Dress trousers of fine and massive blue cloth, with 2½" gold oakleaf lace stripes; two pairs of white silk hose; a good set of gilt buckles for knee-breeches and shoes, in their fitted velvet-lined case; all contained in a tin trunk by HILL BROS, 3 OLD BOND St, with brass plaque engraved The Right Honble. Lot Essay

William Kenrick (1831-1919) was Liberal Unionist MP for Birmingham from 1885-99. He married the sister of Joseph Chamberlain, while Kenrick's own sister became the first Mrs Chamberlain. A room from his house, The Grove, Harborne, is now in the Victoria & Albert Museum. He became a Privy Counsellor in 1899.
