Major H.R. Wallis was born in 1863 and was commissioned into the Indian Army in 1887. Serving in the Hazara Campaign of 1888, he was promoted Lieutenant in the following year. Between 1897-98 he served in the Tirah Campaign, taking part in the operations in the Bara Valley in December 1897. Wallis attained the rank of Major in 1908.
