District Superintendent Bentinck Landale Cumberland, following service in the Burma operations of 1885-89, was placed on the Retired List in 1906. In February 1916, however, he was appointed a Temporary Lieutenant in the 2nd Garrison Battalion, Royal Irish Regiment, and posted 'for duty at a vulnerable point on the South-East Coast of Ireland', an appointment that proved short lived in light of his 'premature ageing ... as a result of long service and exposure to climate in Burma and India' while in the Police. In September 1916, he was found unfit for further military service and discharged.
