Private Charles Doswell was born in Ringwood, Hampshire and originally enlisted in the 62nd Foot in 1842, aged 20 years. Present in the First Sikh War, he received the Sutlej Medal for Ferozeshuhur, where he was wounded, and the clasp for 'Sobraon'. Doswell transferred to the 3rd Battalion, Grenadier Guards in 1854 and served in the Crimean War, receiving the Medal with four clasps and Turkish Crimea Medal. Doswell was discharged at his own request in 1863 having additionally received the Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal.
