Major Clement Smith was born in January 1848 and was originally commissioned into the 62nd Foot as an Ensign in August 1868. Transferring to the 19th Hussars as a Lieutenant in April 1872, he was advanced to Captain in May 1878 and to Major in April 1882. Smith fought with 19th Hussars in the Egypt operations of 1882 and was present at Kassasin and Tel-el-Kebir, and transferred to the Army Pay Department in August 1884. He appears to have finished his career on attachment to the 7th Hussars.
