Lot Essay

Private William Harry Moon was born in Paddington, London in September 1895 and joined the 3rd Battalion, Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry, the Royal Cornwall Rangers Militia in November 1912, aged 17 years. Transferring as a Regular to the 1st Battalion in March 1913, he quickly gained advancement to Lance-Corporal and joined the Regiment in France in November 1914. Here, having participated in the action at Hill 60 and in the Second Battle of Ypres, he was severely wounded in an enemy bombardment on 14.6.1915, sustaining injuries to both thighs and his left foot. Hospitalised in Boulogne, he returned to the U.K. where he was found unfit for further service, being discharged in May 1916.
