Lot Essay

Lieutenant-Colonel John Phillip Anthony Theobald was born in Kensington in 1825, the son of a Clergyman, and was appointed a Cornet in December 1845, shortly before his arrival in India. Posted to the 6th Cavalry in November 1846, he went on to witness active service with the Regiment in the Punjab Campaign, being present at the Battles of Chilianwala and Goojerat, having been advanced to Captain in November 1856, in the Indian Mutiny, when he was present at the capture of Lucknow in March 1858. Theobald was given the Brevet of Major in January 1865 and placed on the Retired List as a half Colonel at the end of 1871. Sadly, he died of 'heat apoplexy' in June 1872, leaving a widow and four children back in the U.K.
