Lieutenant-Colonel John Addy was born in 1826 and entered the Army as a Private in the 5th Dragoon Guards in 1840. Becoming a Farrier-Major, he was appointed Sergeant in 1852, serving with his Regiment in the Crimea at the Battles of Balaklava and Inkermann, and at Tchernaya and the Siege of Sebastopol. Probably as a result of these actions, especially that at Balaklava on 25.10.1854 with the Heavy Brigade, he was commissioned Lieutenant into the Land Transport Corps on 6.9.1855. Promoted Captain in 1856, he was placed on Half-Pay in 1859 to become the Recruiting Officer at Limerick. He attained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1878.
