Lieutenant-Colonel James Cecil Balfour Craster was born in Lansdown, Bath in July 1854, the son of an Army Officer, and was commissioned into the Indian Army as a 2nd Lieutenant in November 1875. As a Lieutenant in the 5th Goorkhas, he fought in the Second Afghan War with the Kurram Field Force and was present in operations in the Khost Valley, in the advance on Kabul and at the action at Charasia. Subsequently as a Captain in the 12th Bengal Infantry, during the Burma operations of 1887-89, he participated in the Salay Expedition. Craster was advanced to Lieutenant-Colonel in November 1901 and was placed on the Retired List in the following year.
