Lot Essay

Lieutenant-Colonel Claude Gregory Woodhouse was born in December 1875 and was originally commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant on the Unattached List in January 1896. Posted to the 126th Baluchis in the late 1890s, he first witnessed active service in the Boxer Rebellion, when he was present at the relief of Pekin. Next actively employed in the Somaliland operations of 1902-04, he was present at the action at Jidballi, and was advanced to Captain in January 1905 and to Major in January 1914.

Initially employed in Egypt on the outbreak of hostilities, Woodhouse was posted to France with his own Double Company to reinforce the 129th Baluchis in June 1915 and remained there until the Indian Division was withdrawn. Next attached to the Aden Field Force, with whom he served in the early part of 1916, he soon afterwards transferred to German East Africa, where he remained until July 1917. His final stint of active service was in the Iraq operations of 1920, where he was Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazette 18.1.1921 refers) and advanced to Lieutenant-Colonel in February 1921. Woodhouse was placed on the Retired List in February 1923 and died at Honiton, Devon in September 1958, aged 83 years.
