Lot Essay

Major Alfred Walter Campbell was born in Scotland in 1868 and gained his Medical Doctorate from Edinburgh before emigrating to Australia. A Medical Practitioner in Sydney, he was also an Honorary Captain in the Reserve of the Australian Army Medical Corps. With the onset of the Great War and aged nearly 47 years, he volunteered for active service. In November 1914 Campbell sailed for Egypt aboard H.M.A.T. Kyarra and completed a years service with the 2nd Australian General Hospital before returning home.
