Sold with a quantity of contemporary documentation, including carbon copies of letters from Franks to his father (dated 27.11.1935 and 24.2.1936), the former addressed at Bagdad, where he was on attachment to the Iraqi Air Force as a Flying Instructor, with related photograph of him in uniform, and the latter at Jerusalem, soon after his marriage, this with three related engagement honeymoon photographs; together with a carbon copy of a poem attributed to Franks, entitled 'Per Ardua Ad Astra: At Dawn' ('... And we fought many dog-fights, until at Gravelines, a town with an ominous name, Two Luftwaffe closed me with deadly designs, As I dived I escaped from their pressing confines, And fell in a tangle of flames ...'), the last two verses believed to have been added by an aunt (dated 29.5.1940 and 31.5.1940); a handwritten letter of condolence to Franks' brother from John Hutchinson, himself an R.A.F. Officer shortly to be killed on active service (dated at R.A.F. Pembrey, 14.6.1940); and a newspaper obituary and a magazine cutting, the latter stating that Franks was serving in No. 610 (County of Chester) Squadron at the same time of his death in action. A rare and poignant collection reflecting the career of a gallant Fighter Pilot.
