Vice-Admiral Sir Thomas Francis Fremantle, [G.C.B.], was born in 1765 and entered the Royal Navy in 1778. A Captain by the outbreak of hostilities in 1793, he went on to distinguish himself in a number of notable actions. As Captain of H.M.S. Tartar in 1794, he was present at the reduction of Bastia, Corsica, and as Captain of the Inconstant he fought gallantly in Hotham's action off Genoa in March 1795, in addition to participating in the capture of the Unité in the following year, the evacuation of Leghorn - for which he was 'Mentioned' - and assisting at the capture of Prombono. Back under Nelson's orders at Santa Cruz in 1797, when he was wounded while in command of the Seahorse, Fremantle was also present at Copenhagen in April 1801 as Captain of the Ganges and at Trafalgar in October 1805, when he commanded the Neptune - she was the third ship in the Weather Column and lost 44 killed and wounded. These latter services resulted in him being awarded a Sword of Honour from the Patriotic Fund, in addition to the Naval Small Gold Medal. Appointed to the command of the Royal Yacht William and Mary in 1807, and advanced to Rear-Admiral in 1810, Fremantle next assumed command of a Squadron in the Mediterranean and was present at the capture of Fiume and Trieste in late 1812. Subsequently created a K.C.B., 'a Baron of the Austrian States, a Knight of Maria Theresa and a Knight of St. Ferdinand and Merit', he died in December 1819 while serving as the C.-in-C. of the Mediterranean. He had been advanced to G.C.B. in the previous year.
