Contained in a hinged wooden glass-fronted case, with an old handwritten note in French reading:

'This Officer's Cross of the Legion of Honour was attached to the uniform of a Chasseur de la Garde which was found in the carriage of the Emperor Napoleon. The carriage and retinue of the French Army arrived in confusion at Charleroi during the night of 18-19 June 1815 (A tragic day - forever deplored)'.
