Sold with Apsley House, London, headed notepaper, upon which is written, 'Order of Charles 3rd of Spain, Instituted Sepr. 10. 1771, Grand Cross, Conferred by King Alfonso XII on Henry 3rd Duke of Wellington' (signed) 'Nicolas Holman'.
Henry Wellesley, 3rd Duke of Wellington, was born in Apsley House on 5.4.1846, the second son of Major-General Lord Charles Wellesley, M.P., who was the second son of the 1st Duke. He was educated at Eton and was Conservative M.P. for Andover between 1874-1880. He succeeded the 2nd Duke in 1884 and died on 6.6.1900.
