Lot Essay
D.C.M. London Gazette 27.9.1901.
Sergeant A.T. Cowell, D.C.M., was severely wounded at Boschbult on 31.3.1902, while serving in the R.H.A. Mounted Rifles. Early on in the action, he would have faced the 'spirited charge' made by the Boers under Liebenberg, a charge that was brought to 'an abrupt end by a steady volume of fire reserved till the enemy was at point-blank range' from the British concealed in some farm buildings. Later in the day, however, the British came under a Boer 'fire-attack' which was 'hotly sustained from tolerably long ranges but upon a compact target' and caused 'considerable loss' (The Times History of the War In South Africa refers).
