Major-General Leslie Napier Younghusband, C.B., C.M.G., was born in August 1866, the son of Major-General J.W. Younghusband, C.S.I., and educated at Clifton and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Initially commissioned into the West Yorkshire Regiment, he transferred to the Indian Staff Corps in 1887 and served as a Captain in the 19th Bengal Lancers on the North West Frontier 1897-98, including the operations in the Bara Valley. Next actively engaged in South Africa, where he was employed with the Imperial Yeomanry, Younghusband was present in operations in Cape Colony between April and May 1902. A Lieutenant-Colonel in the 23rd Cavalry by the outbreak of hostilities in August 1914, he served throughout the Great War and was five times Mentioned in Despatches, in addition to being created a C.B. and C.M.G. Younghusband was advanced to Major-General in 1920, and was placed on the Retired List in the following year. 'A Member of a distinguished family of soldiers', and one of whose 'brothers was the eminent traveller who made one of the first attempts to climb Everest after the War', the General died in March 1939.
