Lieutenant-Colonel Herbert Hamilton Northey, C.M.G., was born in June 1870 and was educated at Somerset College and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Commissioned into the Royal Scots Fusiliers as a 2nd Lieutenant in July 1891, he was advanced to Lieutenant in July 1893 and participated in the operations on the North West Frontier 1897-98, including those on the Samana and the action at Ublan Pass on 27.8.1897, in addition to service on the Staff in the Tirah Expeditionary Force. Attaining the rank of Captain in June 1899, Northey was swiftly back in action in South Africa, where he was taken Prisoner of War at Colenso while participating in the operations to relieve the garrison at Ladysmith. Subsequently released, he went on to serve in the Transvaal from November 1900 until May 1902, and was latterly on the Staff and Commandant at Krokodil Poort.

Having been advanced to Major back in February 1912, Northey was given command of the 6th (Service) Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers in May 1915, took it to France and was wounded at the Battle of Loos that October - Winston Churchill assumed command of the Battalion. Returning to the 6th in France as C.O. in November 1916, he remained on active service until April 1917. Awarded the C.M.G. and Mentioned in Despatches, Northey was placed on the Retired List as a Lieutenant-Colonel in October 1919 and died in January 1938.
